TAWK Featured Family -
'Breals On Wheels'

1.  Who are you?

We are the Brearley Family from Dunsborough WA and have been on the road for almost 3 months.  Jeff (39), Jodie (34), Sky (4,5) and Bella (3).

We are travelling in a Toyota Landcruiser with a Aura Caravan from Cameron Caravans.  We plan to be on the road for 12 months and going clockwise from Dunsborough WA.

2.   Why did you make your decision to TAWK?

We have our own business and my husband was so stressed and sick of work, that on our yearly holiday up north we made the decision to go home and plan our trip for the following year to travel Australia. We were in a good position with our own home so we thought why not rent that out so we had something to come back to and just hit the road.

3.   How did you get organised and how did you prepare?

We gave ourselves 12 months to get ready to go. We had to buy a new car, a new van, get our business sorted AND save $$$. Also Sky had just started Kindy so we let her do 1 term and then hit the road. Kindy isn't compulsory in WA so we didn't need to register for home schooling or anything so that was another reason to do it now.

4.  What has been your biggest joy?

Our greatest joy has been spending every moment with our girls just cruising around and checking out so many cool places.

5. What has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?

Our biggest challenge has probably been just my husband getting used to the kids 24/7 - Haha!  We have always done lots of camping so our kids adjusted to travelling really quick. We just make sure we both have some time-out by ourselves, to either go for a walk, surfing or fishing.

6.   Where have you enjoyed the most and Where disappointed you the most?

We have enjoyed Gnaraloo Station (3 mile camp) and the Ningaloo Reef the most so far. We love the coast, so these places have been amazing so far.

Probably the only negative, has been the fishing; Jeff has been catching lots but the sharks seem to get them before the fish can board the boat.

7.   How did you get organised with schooling, what did/do you do and how did you come to that decision?

We were lucky with school as Sky was only in Kindy and its not compulsory so we were able to travel without any home schooling. We are still doing a bit with her, but mainly reading and a few  books we got from her school.

8.   What surprised you most about the trip?

We are so surprised as to how many families are doing the exact same thing as us. It's also amazing how relaxed we are.  It really has made us aware of how important it is to slow down and take time to enjoy our kids and take the time to do it.

9.   What would be three pieces of advice to give to future TAWKers?

Our 3 pieces of advice are:

  1. Do it!!!
  2. Enjoy every day.
  3. Don't rush it. Take time to check out places and don't just rush to the next.

10.   How do you think that this adventure has changed your family?

Its still early days for us but we already can see our kids becoming so confident and making new friends so easily. And for Jeff and I, I think we just appreciate each other more everyday.

Our biggest tip for other people thinking of traveling, just try and do it. I know sometimes its a scary thought but honestly its the best thing we have ever done.
