We are the Greer Family. We have been full time on the road for three and a half years with no end date in sight. We are traveling in our self customer built Jayco Expanda towed by our vintage 1968 Jeep Truck. At this stage, it's just the three of us.
We decided to start TAWKing for three main reasons.
We made our decision to TAWK very quickly, it just felt right. We had no hesitation in selling EVERYTHING and put the wheels in motion to empty our house out. We already had our van and we already had our car, so within a few months, we had everything sold up and hit the road.
Our biggest joy has been being able to spend everyday together and experience every new adventure as a family. To share all the excitement, the ups and downs, together as a team. And being able to watch our daughter grow and develop before our eyes.
Also, seeing parts of this amazing country with your own eyes rather than in books and on TV has been completely surreal.
Our biggest challenge has been when the gearbox blew in our car, only about 12 months in. We were in the middle of nowhere and stress and tensions were running very high!! We organised a tilt tray back to the nearest town, then went about finding a house sitting job so we could have our car fixed without the stress and costs adding up more than they needed to.
We thoroughly enjoyed South Australia....pretty every spot we went to. It was just beautiful, had amazing food, the roads were pretty good and we just enjoyed everything about our time spent there.
The place that disappointed us the most was Central Western Australia. It was very expensive, there was a lot of driving and many hours spent in the car to get from one place to the next and the scenery wasn't all that nice either. Just an all round very average experience.

For schooling, we went straight for Distance Education. After plenty of research, phone calls and asking for advice on travel pages on Facebook, it seemed like the easiest and most convenient option to get is going.
However, this coming year, we will be moving to Homeschooling, for the flexibility and freedom that it offers.
The thing that surprised us most has been how rude people actually are, especially those working in customer service. There was no particular incident or place, it has just been very surprising how many places seem put out by your presence and business, which we though was very odd.
Our 3 pieces of advice are:
This adventure has definitely brought us a lot closer as a family and improved the way we all interact with each other. We have gained a better understanding of each other's likes and dislikes and has helped us learn how to actually be there for each other.
Also, take time to settle into your new living situation. It really is a massive lifestyle change for everyone. For some, it takes time to get used it but it will get better. And DON'T RUSH!! There is so much of this amazing country to see that's not listed in a travel brochure or book. It's not just about the big ticket tourist items. Do your research and see the things that suit you and matter to your family. We're all different.
Finally, never be afraid to walk up and talk to other travelling families, you never know when you might just make a new friend. They also, may have some handy tips and tricks that might just help you.
